Praying Specifically ∙∙∙
He said, blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His lovingkindness and His truth toward my master; as for me, “I being in the way, the Lord led me.” [KJV] – Genesis 24:27
Genesis 24:1-16
Abraham was now a very old man, and the LORD had blessed him in every way. One day, Abraham said to his oldest servant, the man in charge of his household, “Go to my homeland, to my relatives, and find a wife there for my son Isaac.”
“For the LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and my native land, solemnly promised to give this land to my descendants. He will send his angel ahead of you, and he will see to it that you find a wife there for my son.”
“O LORD, God of my master, Abraham,” he prayed. “Please give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master, Abraham.” “See, I am standing here beside this spring, and the young women of the town are coming out to draw water.”
“This is my request. I will ask one of them, ‘Please give me a drink from your jug.’ If she says, ‘Yes, have a drink, and I will water your camels, too!’ – let her be the one you have selected as Isaac’s wife. This is how I will know that you have shown unfailing love to my master.”
Before he had finished praying, he saw a young woman named Rebecca coming out with her water jug on her shoulder. Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar.” She said, “Drink, my lord,” and she quickly lowered her jar to her hand and gave him a drink.
Now, when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will also draw for your camels until they have finished drinking.”
Navigating Life: From Dead Reckoning to Live Reckoning
For thousands of years, humans have developed clever ways to navigate their journeys. In ancient times, travelers depended on landmarks, the sun, and the stars to find their way. As exploration progressed, especially during the age of early explorers like Columbus, a method called dead reckoning became a standard navigation tool. This technique involved starting from a known location and plotting a course based on compass heading, speed, and time.
However, unlike dead reckoning, which depends on guesses and assumptions, the Father uses live reckoning to guide His people. When we seek His direction, we only need to ask, and He promises to guide us in real time.
Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
The Father’s Methods of Guidance
Throughout history, the Father has used a variety of extraordinary methods to guide and communicate with His people. These include signs, dreams, visions, pillars of fire and smoke, angels, and other miraculous means. One of the most remarkable examples of the Father’s immediate guidance is found in the story of Abraham’s servant in Genesis 24.
A Mission of Great Importance
Abraham entrusted his servant with a crucial mission: to find a wife for Abraham’s son, Isaac. This was not an ordinary task; it was an assignment of immense significance that required trust, wisdom, and divine guidance. The servant accepted the assignment and prepared for the journey, fully aware of the importance of his responsibility.
As he traveled, the servant continually sought the Father’s guidance through prayer. His prayers were not vague or general; he did not simply ask for success or blessings. Instead, he prayed with specificity, asking the Father to reveal Isaac’s future wife through her actions and generosity.
A Prayer Answered in Real Time
The servant’s prayer was simple yet precise. He asked the Father to identify the right woman by her willingness to provide water for him and his camels. This act of kindness and generosity would serve as a definite sign.
The Father answered the servant’s prayer in real time. Rebecca, through her actions, showed herself to be the one chosen for Isaac. She did not do these things out of obligation, but as a natural expression of her heart. Her willingness to serve and her generosity were precisely the qualities the servant had prayed for.
Principles of Divine Guidance
The story of Abraham’s servant illustrates the Father’s desire to guide His people. Sometimes, His guidance is specific and immediate, as in the case of Rebecca. Other times, it may be less direct. Regardless of the method, the underlying principles remain the same:
- The Father desires to guide us.
- He wants us to seek His guidance through prayer.
- He calls us to follow His direction with precision and trust, without hesitation or doubt.
REFLECT & PRAY
Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to trust in the Lord wholeheartedly and to seek His will in all we do. When we do so, He promises to direct our paths.
Father, I have spent enough time wandering aimlessly, unsure of where I was going. Teach me to depend on You fully. Reveal to me where You want me to go and what You want me to do. Help me to trust Your guidance and to follow it without wavering.
INSIGHT
A Faithful Servant on a Divine Mission
This was not the servant’s first time seeking the Father’s guidance. Over the years, he had learned to pray sincerely and to trust in the Father’s will and guidance. His main goal was to please his master, Abraham, and to remain faithful to the Father. This captures the true essence of being a servant: to be reliable, devoted, and committed to completing one’s mission.
The servant showed what it means to be a good and faithful servant. His actions demonstrated his deep trust in the Father’s guidance and his unwavering dedication to his master’s desires.
The Father’s Perfect Guidance
The Father’s live reckoning was flawless. Of all the homes in the city of Nahor, the servant was led straight to the house of Abraham’s relatives. This was no coincidence but a clear demonstration of divine guidance.
Genesis 24:27: “Praise the LORD, the God of my master, Abraham,” he said. “The LORD has shown unfailing love and faithfulness to my master, for he has led me straight to my master’s relatives.”
The servant was actively following the guidance he had received, and as he moved forward in faith, the Father continued to guide him. As the King James Version beautifully puts it, “I being in the way, the Lord led me” (Genesis 24:27).
A Prayer Answered in Real Time
The servant’s prayer was not only specific but also answered with remarkable immediacy.
Genesis 24:45: “Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebecca came out with her jar on her shoulder, and went down to the spring and drew, and I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’”
Before the servant even finished praying in his heart, the Father arranged events to bring Rebecca to the well at exactly the right moment. She stepped out of her house, jar in hand, without knowing she was fulfilling the servant’s prayer.
This remarkable sequence of events shows the Father’s sovereignty and His attentiveness to the prayers of His children. Even though it may seem miraculous, this is simply the usual way things work in God’s kingdom. The Father’s will is fulfilled on earth as it is in heaven, often in answer to His people’s prayers.
Isaiah 65:24: “Before they even call out, I will respond; while they are still speaking, I will hear.”
Recognizing the Father’s Hand
Children of the King who depend on the Father recognize His unmistakable touch in their lives. They see His hand at work and respond with acknowledgment and submission. This was evident in the response of Laban and Bethuel when they realized the divine nature of the servant’s mission.
Genesis 24:50-51: “Then Laban and Bethuel replied, ‘The LORD has obviously brought you here, so there is nothing we can say. Here is Rebecca; take her and go. Yes, let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the LORD has directed.’”
A Narrative of Faith and Worship
What makes this story especially powerful is the servant’s careful effort to confirm the Father’s guidance. Even though the readers already know Rebecca’s identity and her family background, the servant takes the time to ask questions and verify for himself. This careful attention to detail highlights his faithfulness and dependence on the Father’s direction.
As Sailhamer notes, “What is unusual about this particular narrative . . . is the fact that even though we, the readers, already know who the young girl was and what family she was from, we still must wait for the servant to inquire of the girl and find out for himself. . ..”
The servant’s response to the Father’s guidance is one of profound gratitude and worship.
Genesis 24:26-27: “Then the man bowed low and worshiped the LORD. ‘Praise the LORD, the God of my master, Abraham,’ he said. ‘The LORD has shown unfailing love and faithfulness to my master, for he has led me straight to my master’s relatives.’”
A Model of Trust and Obedience
The story of Abraham’s servant powerfully illustrates trust, obedience, and the Father’s faithfulness. It reminds us that when we sincerely seek the Father’s guidance with faith, He will lead us in the right direction. The servant’s unwavering dedication to his mission and his acknowledgment of the Father’s involvement in every step serve as an inspiring example for anyone who wants to walk in God’s will.
The Father’s guidance is not always immediate or specific, but it’s always there for those who seek it. Like Abraham’s servant, we are called to pray with faith and specificity, trusting that the Father will provide the direction we need. Whether through extraordinary signs or quiet prompting from His Spirit, the Father’s guidance constantly reminds us of His love and care for His children.
It is up to us to learn to trust Him, seek His will, and follow His path with confidence and obedience.
