Deluded, They Believe The Lie

Deluded, They Believe The Lie

For this reason, God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie. – 2 Thessalonians 2:11

2 Thessalonians 2:7-11

For this lawlessness is already at work secretly, and it will remain secret until the one who is holding it back steps out of the way.

Then the man of lawlessness will be revealed, but the Lord Jesus will kill him with the breath of his mouth and destroy him by the splendor of his coming.

This man will come to do the work of Satan with counterfeit power and signs and miracles. He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them.

So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies.

The Big Lie in History

The idea of the “Big Lie” is commonly associated with propaganda: a falsehood so enormous and so confidently repeated that people begin to accept it as true. Adolf Hitler described this concept in Mein Kampf (1925), calling it a lie so “colossal” that people would not imagine someone distorting the truth so brazenly.

Hitler also expressed the principle this way: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”

Joseph Goebbels, who served as Nazi Germany’s Minister of Propaganda, expanded this approach through the strategic use of false narratives to manipulate public opinion and secure acceptance of National Socialism. Goebbels pioneered the use of Fake News to make people accept the lies of the Nazi Party.

The Big Lie in Eden

Yet the pattern behind the “Big Lie” did not begin in the modern political world. The Scriptures show that this strategy reaches back to the opening chapters of human history. In Genesis, the first great deception led humanity into sin and resulted in the Fall.

Genesis 3:1-6:

“The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, ‘Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?’ ‘Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,’ the woman replied.

‘It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, “You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.”‘

‘You won’t die!’ the serpent replied to the woman.

‘God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.’

The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful, and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So, she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.”

The Strategy of Deception

The devil was present in Eden and worked through the serpent to advance his rebellion and tempt Eve. The Scriptures indicate the broader spiritual reality behind that moment of deception. Ezekiel 28:13: “You were in Eden, the garden of God.”

Eve was innocent, unaware, and unguarded. The enemy took advantage of her innocence by planting doubt where trust once was. He aimed to weaken her confidence in God’s character, making his falsehood more convincing. He lied to her about the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, to cast suspicion on God’s words and motives. By sowing doubt and stirring skepticism, he made her believe the lies.

Two things happened simultaneously. Eve turned away from the Father’s truth, and she accepted a counterfeit story spun by the enemy. As a result, the human race was plunged into sin.

This pattern continues to this day. When truth is dismissed, falsehood is accepted.

REFLECT & PRAY

1 Timothy 4:1: “Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.”

Father, help me embrace the truth and become less vulnerable to lies, deception, and delusion. Give me wisdom, spiritual clarity, and discernment so that I may recognize error and remain grounded in the truth.

The Final Growth of Rebellion and Falsehood

The end times will be characterized by widespread rebellion against the truth and intense hostility toward those who uphold it. Falsehood will not merely remain on the margins of society but will move to its very center. This growing rejection of truth peaks when most of humanity accepts “The Lie.”

The Scriptures make clear that, from the beginning, evil forces have shaped thought, distorted truth, and influenced human rebellion. The apostle John offers a clear litmus test for discerning whether or not a spirit is from the Father.

1 John 4:3: “Every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.”

Testing the Spirits

Therefore, children of the King are instructed not to accept every spiritual claim at face value. Discernment is crucial, and testing the spirits is a vital act of faithfulness to the Father.

1 John 4:1: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

The increase of false teachers, false prophets, and deceptive messengers is one of the signs associated with the end of the age. The rise of spiritual confusion is not incidental; it is part of the broader atmosphere of last-day’s rebellion described in Matthew 24:3-26.

John reinforces this same perspective by explaining that the spirit of antichrist is not only future, but already active in history through many antichrists.

1 John 2:18: “Dear children, the last hour is here. You have heard that the Antichrist is coming, and already many such antichrists have appeared. From this, we know that the last hour has come.”

The Judgment of Delusion

Lies spread because people often prefer falsehoods to the truth. A disturbing, even frightening, link exists between choosing deception and ending up deceived. When individuals reject the truth, their ability to discern weakens; conversely, accepting the truth strengthens resistance to falsehood.

Those who continually reject truth may find themselves deluded by the very deception they have chosen. Distressingly, the Father allows false information to proliferate as a form of judgment and also sends a deceiving influence.

2 Thessalonians 2:11: “Consequently, God sends on them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false.”

The Principle of Spiritual Consequence

In a single, arresting phrase, Hosea captures the unbreakable law of spiritual and moral consequence. Hosea 8:7: “They have planted the wind and will harvest the whirlwind.”

The phrase “Sowing the wind” has transcended its original meaning, becoming a proverbial expression of a broader principle of moral cause and effect. It highlights the illusion that what seems beneficial may ultimately prove useless or harmful. It highlights the futility and moral blindness inherent in reckless actions rooted in falsehood and deception. When individuals or societies choose falsehood over truth, they often face consequences that are wildly disproportionate to the original act.

Sowing the Wind

“Sowing the wind” refers to chasing after illusions, meaninglessness, or anything devoid of life. Since wind cannot nourish, stabilize, or produce crops, planting the wind is a futile endeavor, targeting something invisible, fleeting, and beyond reach.

Planting involves the hope of future benefits, such as fruit, harvest, or returns. Those who sow the wind rely on illusions rather than truth, vanity instead of purpose, and rebellion instead of loyalty. They cultivate emptiness that cannot bear real fruit, yet they foolishly expect positive results. Their seeds are barren and lifeless, incapable of yielding genuine growth. What appears to be good is ultimately vanity and folly.

Reaping the Whirlwind

“Reaping the whirlwind” means facing the devastating consequences of a hollow way of life. It exposes the full destructiveness of sowing the wind: what was once planted in emptiness and folly returns not as a mild breeze but as a violent, overwhelming storm. The image underscores escalation, showing how seemingly small or naïve actions can yield consequences far more chaotic and severe than anticipated.

This dynamic illustrates how deception can develop into delusion. Delusion is not just a fleeting mistake; it is a persistent state in which false beliefs dominate perception and judgment. As rebellion and deception increase, so does delusion. Individuals frequently believe they are doing what is right, even when they are profoundly mistaken.

From Darkness to Light

Apart from divine intervention, all of humanity is caught in delusion and spiritual death. But thank God, every child of the King has been snatched out of the kingdom of darkness and brought into the kingdom of light. We are now called to walk in that light.

1 Thessalonians 5:3: “While they are saying, ‘Peace and safety!’ then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.”

Redemption is not merely forgiveness; it is deliverance from spiritual bondage and entry into new life in Christ. Because of our rescue, we are now called to walk in the light rather than return to the patterns of darkness from which we were saved.

Ephesians 2:1-3:

“Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil, the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.

All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature; that is, our very nature, we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.”

The Growth of Deception

As the age nears its end, deception becomes more common and intense. Falsehood spreads not just through repetition but also because many are spiritually inclined to believe it. When truth is dismissed, blindness worsens and eventually turns into delusion, leading people not only to hear lies but also to live by them.

The Need for Discernment

The Scriptures encourage children of the King to practice discernment. They should use God’s word to evaluate spiritual claims, cultural narratives, and religious voices. In a time of confusion, discernment is essential for spiritual maturity and faithfulness.

Walking in the Light

Those who are not united with Christ continue to dwell in deception and spiritual death. In contrast, those in Christ have received new life through grace. As a result of this new life, we are called to walk in the light, stay rooted in truth, remain vigilant against deception, and rest in our Father’s forgiving mercy.
