Living with Danger ∙∙

Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will signal your return and the end of the world? – Matthew 24:3

Ezekiel 33:4-7

If those who hear the warning refuse to take action, it is their own fault if they die. They heard the warning but ignored it, so the responsibility is theirs. If they had listened to the warning, they could have saved their lives. But if the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn’t sound the alarm to warn the people, he is responsible for their captivity. They will die in their sins, but I will hold the watchman responsible for their deaths.

Now, son of man, I am making you a watchman for the people of Israel. Therefore, listen to what I say and warn them for me.

Stromboli and the Watching of Signs

Mount Stromboli is an active volcano characterized by constant rumbling and frequent explosions at its summit. During the day, smoke billows from its peak; at night, glowing lava fragments and flashes illuminate the sky and terrain. This persistent spectacle has earned it the nickname “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean.” Lava commonly flows down the Sciara del Fuoco, or “Stream of Fire,” before reaching the sea.

Although the volcano is continuously active, residents have adapted to living under its shadow. Some compare it to background noise, such as railway tracks or airports, but with far greater risk. Despite this, the island often feels tranquil, though never without some tension. Gaia Squarci described Stromboli as “a calm, with a tension underneath,” capturing this contrast.

For volcanologists, Mount Stromboli serves as a living laboratory. Experts monitor it closely for signs of potential eruptions, using specialized instruments to detect significant behavioral changes. Since volcanoes often swell before erupting, such monitoring can provide early warnings. In 2019, an early warning system was implemented to enhance safety, but the volcano remains inherently unpredictable.

There is wisdom in learning from those who study Stromboli with such care. Volcanologists do not disregard warning signs, minimize credible evidence, or postpone necessary action. Instead, they remain alert, attentive, and ready to respond when danger approaches.

Spiritual Watchfulness and the Signs of the Times

Those grounded in the Scriptures know they reveal an impending judgment on the earth and urge believers to remain spiritually alert. Consequently, many vigilantly watch for signs related to the last days.

The apostles of Jesus, knowing that He was the Messiah and King of Israel, eagerly sought to understand when His kingdom would come. As Jesus entered Jerusalem for the final time before His Crucifixion, they directly inquired about the timing of these events and the signs that would indicate the end of the age.

Matthew 24:3: “Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will signal your return and the end of the world?”

Their question reflects a deep desire to understand both the sequence of events and the signs of the end times.

REFLECT & PRAY

Children of the King are called to take seriously what God has revealed about the future. Prophecy is not intended to create fear but to promote alertness, stability, and obedience.

Father, help us be faithful watchers who recognize the signs, walk in wisdom, and speak the truth with courage and clarity. Guide us to remain alert, steadfast, and ready to warn others with love and conviction.

INSIGHT

Spiritual Watchfulness and the Signs of the Times

Vigilant observation should lead to responsible action. A true watcher not only detects warning signs but also reacts with wisdom and promptness. Every society depends on this kind of attentiveness. Meteorologists track storms, economists monitor instability, public health officials watch for outbreaks, and political analysts assess social change. In each case, observation brings responsibility. What is seen must be understood, and what is understood must shape action.

In the same way, the Father’s watchers are called to disciplined spiritual attentiveness. Their awareness is not shaped by speculation or curiosity, but by diligence, reverence, and receptivity to truth. Because the Scriptures contain prophetic warnings about the last days, children of the King must read them carefully, with hearts enlightened to discern His activity in history. We must remain responsive to the Holy Spirit and attentive to the Father’s voice.

The Lord Jesus Christ provided clear guidance about the end of the age. He issued broad and specific prophetic warnings to help watchers discern the times and stay rooted in truth, preventing confusion.

Broad Predictions – The First Half of the 70th Week of Daniel

In His Olivet Discourse, Jesus initially outlined the broad indicators of the end times. These signs anticipate a world becoming characterized by deception, chaos, persecution, betrayal, and moral decline.

Matthew 24:4-12:

Jesus told them, Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.

Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers. Many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.

These broad predictions depict a world under growing pressure. Deception spreads, conflict intensifies, natural disasters increase, and persecution deepens. Many fall away, while lawlessness becomes so widespread that love itself grows cold. Jesus presents these events not as isolated troubles but as the beginning of birth pangs that signal a far greater culmination to come.

Specific Predictions – The Second Half of the 70th Week of Daniel

Alongside these broader signs, Jesus also provided more definite prophetic markers associated with the closing phase of this present age. These details sharpen the focus of those who watch and underscore the certainty of His return.

Matthew 24:14-30:

“And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world so that all nations will hear it, and then the end will come. The day is coming when you will see what Daniel the prophet spoke about – the abomination of desolation [the Antichrist] that causes desecration, standing in the Holy Place.

For as the lightning flashes in the east and shines to the west, so it will be when the Son of Man comes. And then, at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the peoples of the Earth. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

These verses move from the worldwide proclamation of the kingdom to a clear act of horrific desecration of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. These predictions culminate in the magnificent second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. His arrival will not be subtle, slow, or ambiguous, but swift, unmistakable, and visible to all.

The Call to Readiness

The exact time of His return remains unknown. History has shown the futility of trying to predict it. As children of the King, we are called not to set dates, but to live in constant readiness.

Matthew 24:44: “You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.”

This command gives shape to the life of the faithful watcher. Readiness is not occasional, nor is it reserved for times of crisis or renewed interest in prophecy. It is to be a continual posture of spiritual alertness, sobriety, and expectation.

A Watchman’s Responsibility

The image of the watchman deepens this calling. In the Old Testament, a watchman carried a solemn duty: to observe danger, sound the warning, and protect the community from destruction.

Ezekiel 33:6-7:

If the watchman sees the enemy coming and doesn’t sound the alarm to warn the people, he is responsible for their captivity. They will die in their sins, but I will hold the watchman responsible for their deaths. Now, son of man, I am making you a watchman for the people of Israel. Therefore, listen to what I say and warn them for me.

Here, watchfulness is inseparable from the duty to speak. To see danger and remain silent is a failure of responsibility. The prophets of the Old Testament served in this role as the Father’s appointed servants and watchers. They were called to hear His word, discern His warnings, and proclaim them faithfully, whether the people received them or resisted them.

Children of Light

That same pattern continues in principle for the people of God today. Every child of the King is called to live as one who belongs to the light rather than the darkness. We are not meant to drift into spiritual dullness or be overtaken by the deception that marks a fallen world. Instead, we are called to remain awake, discerning, and steadfast.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11:

“Now concerning how and when all this will happen, dear brothers and sisters, we don’t really need to write you. For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night. When people are saying, ‘Everything is peaceful and secure,’ then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.

But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out his anger on us. Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”

Warning, Identity, and Hope

Paul’s words unite warning, identity, and hope. The day of the Lord will come suddenly upon the unsuspecting, but believers are not left in darkness. They are children of light, called to vigilance and clarity of mind. Their watchfulness is not driven by fear, but by confidence in the saving work of Christ. Because He died for His people, they await His return not with dread, but with assurance and perseverance.

Living as Faithful Watchers

Watching faithfully involves living in spiritual alertness, which is shaped by the Scriptures, led by the Holy Spirit, and sustained by hope in Christ. It requires resisting deception, understanding the times, warning others with love, and enduring with trust.

As the triumphant Second Coming of Jesus Christ approaches, children of the King must remain watchful in prayer, with firm hearts and attentive minds.
