Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? – Romans 6:16

John 8:34 Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.

Romans 6:16-23

Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you. Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.

Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now, you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.

And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom.

But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gaming Disorder as a Recognized Condition

In May 2019, the World Health Organization officially included “Gaming Disorder” in its classification of addictive behaviors and substance-related disorders. It was included in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). Gaming Disorder is characterized by a persistent pattern of uncontrolled gaming, whether digital or video, in which play begins to dominate a person’s life.

As gaming takes precedence, it disrupts responsibilities and relationships, leading to significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas of life.

Why Are Video Games So Compelling?

This realization should not be surprising. Video games are often intentionally designed to be deeply engaging. Their immersive quality is well established, and many developers use psychological strategies that encourage continued participation. The virtual worlds they construct can be intensely attractive, creating a powerful desire to continue playing.

The Expanding Role of Video Games

Over time, video games have become far more than a form of entertainment. For many individuals, they now function as sources of identity, self-worth, fulfillment, and accomplishment. Games reward persistence while often eliminating the real-world consequences that normally accompany failure. Because of this, gaming can provide a sense of control and achievement that may feel more accessible than success in relationships, work, or other daily responsibilities.

As Meghan Vivo observed, “Video games have done far more than change how we entertain ourselves. They have changed how we communicate, how much time we spend with friends and family, and how much time we invest in active, real-life pursuits.” Her observation captures a broader cultural shift in which virtual engagement increasingly replaces direct human interaction, often to the detriment of healthy face-to-face social development.

Research on the Effects of Excessive Gaming

Research has reinforced these concerns. A study published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, titled “More Than Just a Game: Video Game and Internet Use During Emerging Adulthood,” identified troubling patterns associated with excessive gaming and internet use. Its findings suggested a range of negative outcomes for both men and women.

The Relational Cost of Gaming

Among students, increased time spent gaming has been linked to a decline in the quality of their relationships with peers and parents. Digital interactions may be engaging and immersive, but they lack the richness and depth of real face-to-face relationships. In many cases, video games simulate friendships and familial bonds but do not offer their true depth or meaning. Gaming can even overshadow important responsibilities, commitments, or career goals, shifting focus away from meaningful activities and personal development.

Overall, these facts imply that excessive gaming is more than just a harmless hobby pushed to an extreme. It can change relationships and influence one’s sense of identity.

The Spiritual Reality Beneath Addiction

Fallen humanity lives in a world filled with enticements, where the allure of addiction is always nearby. Addictive behaviors go beyond mere repetition; they represent a form of bondage, where a habit, practice, or substance exerts psychological and physical control over an individual’s life. Furthermore, the Scriptures emphasize that addiction is not just a behavioral issue but a deeper manifestation of underlying sin.

Sin is far more than an unfortunate pattern or a collection of poor decisions. Sin is a hidden tyrant, exercising dominion over all who surrender themselves to its influence. What begins as desire can harden into captivity, and what appears manageable can become a ruling power. In this way, sin operates as an unseen master, enslaving those who yield to it.

In Romans 6:16, the apostle Paul writes, “Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey?”

The Lord Jesus Christ declares in John 8:34: “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.”

REFLECT & PRAY

The Father provides true freedom through the Lord Jesus Christ. Through His power, habits may be broken.

Father, thank You for making freedom from sin and addictive behaviors possible for Your children. Strengthen us to make wise choices, resist enslaving habits, and walk in the freedom You provide.

INSIGHT

The Paradox of Slavery and Freedom

Living under a master’s authority creates a paradox: what seems like freedom could actually be a deeper form of slavery. Since humans are born in sin, they are naturally under its influence from the beginning. This feels normal, not because it’s good, but because it’s familiar, making it the only reality many have ever experienced.

Although people may think they are merely choosing among different sins, the underlying power driving them remains the same. The forms of bondage may vary, but the controlling force of sin’s enslaving power beneath them does not change. Yet this is not the whole story. Through the help of the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, true freedom has graciously been made available.

John 8:36: “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”

John 8:31-32:

“You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Freedom Through a New Master

Freedom from sin’s enslaving power requires a decisive act of the will. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, such freedom is real and within reach, not merely wishful thinking. A person is not doomed to remain under sin’s control forever; one can abandon their old allegiance and choose a new one. In cases like gaming disorder, the game subtly becomes the master, gradually gaining control over the gamer.

True freedom comes through knowing the truth and willingly surrendering one’s life to Jesus Christ. When He becomes the Master, the authority of our former master diminishes. Its demands weaken, and its commands no longer demand obedience. The influence of sin is overcome by a greater power, enabling a soul previously in bondage to begin living genuinely free.

Paul: An Example of Deliverance

The apostle Paul offers a compelling example of such transformation. Before his encounter with Christ, he was driven by self-righteous pride and violent zeal, actively pursuing and harming Jewish believers in Jesus. His life was marked by chaos and fervent intensity. Only divine intervention could alter such destructive passions.

The intervention came suddenly and unmistakably; a single encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ immediately brought his violent course to an end. Ironically, the one who had shattered the lives of others was himself shattered by a direct intervention by the living God.

Acts 9:3-5:

“As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?’

‘Who are you, lord?’ Saul asked. And the voice replied, ‘I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting!’”

Paul realized he was in the presence of Someone sent by the Father. He addressed Him as Lord, but it was evident this was no ordinary messenger. It was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Paul was amazed by the encounter, which made him drop up all resistance. He was temporarily blinded physically. His life was drastically changed, and he immediately received guidance for his new path.

A Life Redirected

Paul became a designated instrument for the Lord Jesus Christ, tasked with delivering His message to the Gentiles, kings, and the people of Israel. From that point onward, his life was fully dedicated to Christ. He immediately began preaching in synagogues, declaring, “He is indeed the Son of God!”

Under this new Master, Paul experienced true freedom and lasting fulfillment. Notably, he often identified himself as a slave of the Lord Jesus Christ. To many, such language might seem contradictory, but spiritually, it reveals a deep truth: the right Master offers real freedom.

This contrasts sharply with the ongoing dissatisfaction that characterizes worldly life. Without the Lord Jesus Christ, human efforts tend to lead to emptiness. People seek, pursue desires, indulge, and restart, yet find nothing that truly satisfies. Sin may seem to promise freedom, but ultimately it brings bondage. Christ calls for surrender, and in exchange, He provides life.
