James 5:16-18

The energized prayer of a righteous man is able to do much.

Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years!

Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain, and the earth began to yield its crops.

Growing in Effective Prayer

There is no question about the sincerity of our hearts or our desire to pray for the good of others. There is nothing we can do to enhance our tender feelings, lovingkindness, or persistence. Instead, our attention should turn toward something deeper: increasing the authority, effectiveness, and spiritual energy of our prayers.

Consider your favorite athlete competing at the highest level of their game. What do you see? They execute their craft with a proficiency that leaves you in awe. Now imagine that same athlete at age 5. You may already see sparks of the greatness they’ll achieve, but can they perform at the same elite level at this age? Of course not! What does it take to transform a 5-year-old into an accomplished world-class athlete? Growth, ongoing training, and continuous development are crucial over time.

Prayer is often the same. Even when our concern for others is genuine and heartfelt, we may pray with the spiritual immaturity of a young child. We are like little children tugging on our Father’s sleeve, asking for what seems best to us from our limited perspective. How do we become mature in our prayers, learning to pray with greater authority, effectiveness, and spiritual power?

The Power of Effective Prayer

James 5:16: “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

The Greek word translated as “effective” is energoumen. Energoumen carries the idea of “active power, operative force, and the capacity to bring about results.” Effective prayer is not merely well-intentioned prayer. It is prayer that is “energized” to “accomplish something.”

Energoumen may also be translated as “energized.” In fact, the English word “energy” is derived from it.

Where does that energy come from? What energizes prayer? Prayer becomes effective through the work of the Holy Spirit. Spirit-empowered prayer accomplishes what God intends. As Moo explains, prayer is powerful because it is energized by God Himself.

Successful Prayer is Energized Prayer.

James 5:16 has been translated in several helpful ways:

• The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results (NLT).
• The energetic, passionate prayers of godly men have the power to accomplish much (MacArthur Study Bible).
• The energized prayer of a righteous man is able to do much (fih).
• Tremendous power is released through the passionate, heartfelt prayer of a godly believer! (TPT).
• The energized prayer of a righteous man has much supernatural power (fih).

These renderings emphasize the same truth: “Effective prayer is prayer filled with divine energy and directed by divine purpose.”

Effective Prayer Produces Results

When James speaks of effective prayer, the unspoken implication is that there is also ineffective prayer. Some prayer is effective, and some is not. How can we tell the difference?

The difference is seen in the results.

Effective prayer accomplishes something. More specifically, it brings about the will of the Father on earth. Prayer is effective when it becomes the means through which God’s purposes are carried into human history.

Praying the Father’s Will

When Jesus prayed, things happened! Unlike those of the scribes and the Pharisees, His prayers were answered. His disciples marveled. They wanted to know the secret.

Finally, one of them built up the courage and asked inLuke 11:1, “Lord, teach us to pray.” According to Matthew 6:9-10, Jesus responded, “Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”

The Father is always at work. He invites His children of the King to join Him in what He is already doing. He does not ask us to create our own plans and then request His assistance in fulfilling them. The kingdom of God is not a democracy governed by human preference. It is a theocracy.

As Blackaby shares, when the Father reaches out to us, He already has His own agenda. He invites us to leave behind our plans and aspirations and accompany Him where He is working. We are to relinquish our own ideas and ambitions. He leads us from being self-centered to being God-centered. When the Father reveals to you where He is working, that becomes His invitation to join Him in His activity.

Effective prayeris praying the Father’s will into existence. Effective prayer is not persuading God to support our agenda. How can we possibly know what His agenda is? How can we partner with Him? He must tell us. How does this happen?

As we seek to know what He wants us to pray, He will tell us! Hearing His voice and responding to His leading is a skill that we learn over time. Elijah shows us the way!

Elijah Reveals the Pattern of Effective Prayer

James tells us in James 5:17, “Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years!”

So, what sets Elijah apart from us? This is not a trick question. The simple one-word answer is: Nothing! Elijah knew what to pray and how to pray because he knew the Father’s plan. He heard the Father’s voice. The Father told him what to pray. Then he prayed the Father’s will into existence.

The Father came to Elisha and revealed His plan to stop all rain for three years.

1 Kings 17:1: “Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, ‘As surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, the God I serve, there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!’”

1 Kings 17:2: “Then the LORD said to Elijah,”

The Father spoke again. 1 Kings 18:1: “Later on, in the third year of the drought, the LORD said to Elijah, ‘Go and present yourself to King Ahab. Tell him that I will soon send rain!’”

Elijah’s prayers were not vague nor uncertain guesses. They were deliberate and aligned with God’s revealed will.

As A. W. Tozer asserted, “Praying is not a shot in the dark. It is not a net cast into the sea hoping for a good catch. Praying is working along with God to fulfill His divine plan.”

E. M. Bounds insists that prayer must be pursued with enduring energy, relentless persistence, and unwavering courage.

Father, when it comes to prayer, I no longer want to remain spiritually immature. Teach me to grow into maturity in the way I pray. Train me to recognize Your will, to hear Your voice, and to join You in what You are doing. Strengthen me to pray with authority, effectiveness, and spiritual energy.

INSIGHT

Moving From Childish Prayer to Mature Prayer

Effective prayer depends on spiritual attentiveness, surrender, and obedience. It grows as children of the King learn to recognize the Father’s voice, submit to His will, and confidently pray what He reveals. This type of prayer helps believers transition from spiritual childhood to maturity. Ultimately, it’s less about how much we care and more about how deeply we align with the Father’s purposes.

Growing Strong in Prayer

Jeremiah 12:5 reveals a vital spiritual reality: if we cannot endure lesser challenges faithfully, we will not be prepared to stand firm in greater ones.

How do we prepare? Spiritual strength does not appear suddenly in moments of pressure. It is formed over time through growth, obedience, and disciplined dependence on God.

Jeremiah 12:5: “If racing against mere men makes you tired, how will you race against horses?”

The way forward begins with humility. We must honestly acknowledge that, in many ways, we remain like children, slowly progressing toward maturity. As we come to the Father, we ask Him to teach and guide us to develop a life of effective prayer.

Watching and Praying With Spiritual Alertness

Matthew 26:41: “Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”

Effective prayer is a science whose laws can be learned and mastered. It is a skill that can be developed. Any child of the King can master it.

Prayer is the hardest thing we will ever do. This highlights the importance of establishing prayer as a consistent and deliberate habit. It should be actively pursued, safeguarded, and integrated into daily routines until it becomes a guiding influence in everyday life.

Through prayer, our hearts grow stronger, our minds find stability, and our will aligns more with God’s.

Leaving Spiritual Childhood Behind

1 Corinthians 13:11: “When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things.”

Spiritual childhood marks the start of a faith-based journey but isn’t meant to last forever. Developing in prayer means shedding immature habits and surface-level thinking. It entails shifting from impulsive, sporadic prayer to deliberate, consistent prayer, and from self-centered prayer to God-centered prayer.

Achieving maturity in prayer doesn’t happen by chance. It results from surrendering to the Spirit, being molded by the Word, and committing to continuous spiritual renewal.

The Measure of Spiritual Life

Ravenhill understood that no child of the King is greater than their prayer life. The two prerequisites to successful Christian living are vision and passion, both born in and maintained by prayer.

Effective prayer is not driven by human intensity alone. It is prayer energized by the Holy Spirit and aligned with the will of the Father.
